I couldn't agree more. Someone I know lives next to a family that moved into a property and hasn't paid a day's rent since. Currently they owe something like a year's rent and still haven't been removed due to the lockdown. Its about time that government and various "caring" organisations woke up to the fact that the people who they think they stand up for are causing landlords to move out of the business of investing in property. Then there will be a real shortage of accommodation.

I guess eventually it will become illegal to obtain any kind of reference for a tenant and landlords will have to let anyone who wants a property to rent it regardless of whether they have the ability to pay or are deemed suitable for the property. People talk about a nanny state, I think we are becoming more like a police state.

Ha yes typical of Labours double standards. I understand John McDonnell has two properties, one is a holiday home in the Norfolk Broad, perhaps he should give that rent free to someone. Perhaps he could contact Shelter, I'm sure they will have a long list of people looking for accommodation. Then maybe he and others like him could show good party spirit and take in a few homeless people off the streets to live in any spare rooms they might have in their houses.

Typical of the likes of left wing Labour, Shelter and all the others who seek to bash landlords and the whole PRS. McDonald's comments are typical of seeing every landlord as bad and money grabbing, with their properties falling into disrepair and taking advantage of tenants. Its a shame he cant find the time to come over to my neck of the woods and I'll give him a tour of our properties which are all kept in very good condition by our landlords, who in the vast majority of cases are more than happy to invest in their properties and keep their tenants happy.

You'd think the likes of Shelter and Generation Rent etc, plus the Government would have enough common sense to realize that a ban on agents fees, would inevitably pass the costs of referencing etc onto the landlord, which in turn would result in landlords increasing the rent to compensate for costs they would now have to bear. The year on year increased rental costs will make tenants far worse off than if they paid the agents fees at the beginning of the tenancy. This I believe is exactly what has happened in Scotland.
